We love it here. Have been about a dozen times since we moved to SF. About to head over again tonight and wanted to leave a review reflecting all our previous visits.
We live in North Beach, known for its Italian restaurants, and we'd always rather take the extra few min to walk over to Amarena in Russian Hill.
Food is consistently excellent. Service is great while also feeling casual/familial and not stuffy.
Menu standouts are the eggplant starter, the mushroom pasta, and the chicken entree. But it's tough to go wrong here :)
I've spent about 3 months in Italy during my 5 times there and I can boldly claim that this was one of my top 3 Italian dinners of my life (others were in Venice, Italy and New York). The pesto was captivating. Our mouths melted at the sight of Linguine alle vongole. The dim, cozy Italian atmosphere greatly enhanced my experience. Undoubtedly one of the main reasons I had such a great time in San Francisco.
Good neighborhood vibe and surprisingly delicate pasta dishes. Sea Bass was a very large cut and perfectly cooked. Octopus and wild boar ragout were standouts.
Great atmosphere for a group or date looking for low key, slightly-casual Italian. Will visit again.
If you really need to yell, but you're sick of doing it into a pillow or alone in your car, this place is perfect. If you go during a busy time, the only way you can communicate is by yelling. It's a never ending cycle. The more other people yell, the more you need to yell. At certain points I just nodded and smiled when my girlfriend was talking. It seemed to be a sufficient reaction most the time. Anyway, the food here was delicious, but I was a little bummed about the portion size. I got around ten raviolis. It was good for my GERD, but not my hunger.
A great Italian restaurant! Definitely worth the try! Every single dish we had here was amazing but I greatly recommend the mushroom pasta and the panacotta
Astonishing - Delicious - Primo, these are words I'd use to describe the food here. The staff was fantastic and the owner stopped by our table. If you enjoy a nice meal with great atmosphere, you should stop reading this review and make your way to Amarena.
TLDR: Slightly less than mediocre experience at Amarena. A few good dishes, LONG WAIT for food.
Pros: Waiter was initially friendly, we were seated seamlessly, waiter patiently walked us through the menu and drinks order came out fast. The bread and pesto served as appetizers were delicious, and I was told the truffle mushroom pasta was a delight.
Cons: OUR ENTREES TOOK ALMOST 1 HOUR TO GET OUT. I haven’t been to a restaurant with a kitchen this slow in a while. Would’ve left if it wasn’t for the bread & pesto and good company I was with. Eventually, food came out and my pasta was mediocre at best. I ordered the Papardelle Al Cinghial (Fettucine w/ Boar meat) and it was meh. I had to ask for some salt (which I know is a faux pas with Italian cuisine but desperate times). Then when it was time to pay for the check, our previously gracious server disappeared! The restaurant has emptied out a bit and our server was no where to be found. Had to find another server to sort things out.
Went here for the first time yesterday. The food and atmosphere were great. Perfect for our little romantic birthday dinner.
Highly recommend the butternut squash ravioli and the carpaccio!
Owner and staff were very nice and accommodating. We will be returning.
